Police Departments in Colorado have Internet Crimes Against Children divisions. The local police along with Homeland Security Investigations and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation who work together as the Colorado Cyber Guardian Task Force. The task force targets those who engage in the enticement of children for sexual purposes online.
The Colorado Cyber Guardian Task Force routinely releases the suspects’ names, ages, self-declared city of residence, and self-declared or otherwise known professions. As such, these press releases can be extraordinarily disturbing especially because they are released before a person is convicted of such a serious crime.
What is Online Child Enticement?
An allegation of luring a child is the most common charge. CRS 18-3-306. Internet luring of a child – A person commits internet luring of a child if they knowingly communicate using a computer or phone (even text message or instant message) to a person who they know or believe to be under fifteen years of age. It also requires in that communication the government proves that they described explicit sexual conduct as defined in section 18-6-403(2)(e), and, in connection with that description, makes a statement persuading or inviting the person to meet them for any purpose, and the actor is more than four years older than the person or than the age the actor believes the person to be.
This type of sexual crime is either a class four or five felony. Importantly, this is the type of crime where prosecutors and court will likely want a prison sentence. Sadly, this is also the type of crime where the allegation can be life-changing. No one wants to be accused of this type of crime.
